Welcome to Canonbie Public Hall, one of the Dumfries and Galloway’s leading community operated halls. The impressive red sandstone building is situated in the centre of the village of Canonbie, on the B6357 which is also the route to Kielder Water, known as the ‘Riever Route. Canonbie is the first village you pass by after you cross the border into Scotland with historical legacy that goes back many, many centuries, truly an established gateway, into Scotland.
The hall overlooks the river Esk; famous for it’s salmon fishing quality, and the building is contained within its own grounds. It has playing fields, a football pitch and children’s play area that is second to none. A visit is never complete until you view or better still play on the extraordinarily well-maintained Green Bowling Club.
Canonbie Public Hall dates back to 1912 when the land on which it stands was gifted to the Parish of Canonbie by the then Duke of Buccleuch. The Dumfries and Galloway Council are custodians the building, and they have taken great care over the years to ensure that the original architectural features have been retained. Many of the original building features are clearly shown on the front facade.
This attractive Border Community Centre offers a spacious and friendly main hall (17.7 mtrs by 9.6 mtrs) that can be adapted to accept even the most demanding requirements. An anti-room (7.5 mtrs by 4.2 mtrs) adjacent to the main hall and offers an independence and congenial ambience, with modern facilities close to hand.
The large and very user-friendly kitchen facilities have been maintained to a high level of attention to detail. The installed equipment includes a six-burner LPG cooker with oven facility, stainless steel microwave, stainless steel heated crockery cupboard complemented by cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery to support up to 150 people.
During 2003/4 in partnership with the Dumfries and Galloway Council a new oil heating system, new toilets, changing and shower facilities were installed. Built into the development at that time was the installation of two disabled toilets along with baby changing facilities.
The number one facility, a must for the touring traveller on the A7 trunk route to Edinburgh, or the B6357 into Scotland. We have the only toilet with disabled facilities available to the public within an 8-mile radius of the Scottish Border and it is open Eight-till-Late all year round. It is available to the travelling public, FREE. Yes, free, a service to our travelling friends.
We have in the village an enthusiastic and considerate volunteer team who are keen to see this wonderful facility used more, and a management team of twelve who look after the day to day running.
Take a walk in our well-maintained grounds; you will be swept away by the natural beauty of the location. The interesting and immense variety of tree’s that lines the riverbank is proof of a long history of care and attention for the environment, by our predecessors.
