Gilnockie Inn & Bridge

'Ye olde Inn'

Back we travel towards the Hollows and there in 1851 was the:

Gilnockie Inn

In the Hollows, according to the 1851 Census lived the Greenwell family in Gilnockie Inn. William Greenwell is the Innkeeper and lived there with his wife Margaret and son William. No sign of an Inn today, but it is most likely to have been the large house on the left hand side of the road travelling south.

We now travel south on the old A7 trunk road towards the Bridge over the river Esk:

Gilnockie Bridge

Built c.1790’s. Some of the stone for the construction of this bridge was rumoured to have come from Gilnockie Hall/Castle, built on the land adjacent to the bridge. A large sandstone memorial stands on the alleged site of the original Gilnockie Hall/Castle, 100 metres south of the Gilnockie Bridge.
